'Because love is of God'

May the love of our Creator and mothers be our gift to all

Sister Carolyn Zahringer

“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.” (1 Jn. 4:7, from Sunday's second reading)

The incarnation of God’s Son in the person of Jesus sets the stage for humanity to learn the lessons of inclusion. God is love! Anyone who believes in God attempts to live in love.

Jesus from the cross gave his mother to John and to all of us, symbolizing a gift to the world. Jesus gave us his mother for a reason, for all seasons, for a lifetime.

On this Mother’s Day weekend, let us celebrate our own birth mothers, our adoptive mothers, as well as our heavenly Mother. Take time to have a personal conversation with Mary. Say a prayer in her honor. Sister Joan Chittister, OSB, says: “Prayer is an affirmation of Holy Trust.” My favorite Marian prayer is the Memorare. Do you have a favorite?

Reflection questions:
  1. Who has mothered us, besides our own mothers, into deeper Christian life?
  2. Who have we mothered into deeper spiritual, emotional growth?

Great reflection. My Mom gave me the best gift of all with her gift of faith. Her devotion to Mary was also embraced by me. I know she’s with me in spirit as she celebrates her 5th Mother’s Day in heaven.

Thanks, Carrie for your reflection on our mothers and our mother, Mary. Good questions about who mothered us and whom have we mothered!

Thank you so much for your thoughts & questions. The question regarding "Who else Mothered you" brought back many thoughts of very beautiful people in my life! Sometimes, we forget them and all they meant to us and how they might have affected our journey.

God Bless you & all of the Good Sisters.

Fr. Bill
