Reflection for Aug. 10, 2025

Entrusted with the Kingdom

Every gift is on loan from God -- how are we using them?

by Sister Agnes Fischer

“To whom much is given, much is expected.”

Jesus tells us that our Father in Heaven was pleased to give us the Kingdom. Therefore:

  1. We must always be prepared to receive God’s call which will come when we least expect it. That is why it is in our best interest to be attentive to what is happening in our lives and in the world, so we can respond correctly.
  2. The best way to prepare for that day is given to us by Christ: "Blessed is the servant whom his master finds fulfilling his duty" (as a spouse, a son or daughter, a parent, an employee, a citizen, a neighbor...).
  3. Our bodies, intelligence, health, and all the good things we believe we deserve are actually gifts from God, to use in the service of others. Let's not waste them.
  4. We are simply stewards of what God has entrusted to us.
  5. How am I caring for and using these gifts?

Thank you for reminding us that we all have a talent and to use and be thankful for that talent.

Thanks for your reflection, Sr. Agnes. Thank you for these reminders of the "much" that is expected of us and ways to respond. I like the concise points you provide!

Thank you, Sr. Aggie, for this reflection to recall that the Kingdom, "whose architect and maker is God", is the goal we seek.

It has passage has always "spooked" me abit to be aware of all the privileges and opportunities I've had for education, travel, etc. “To whom much is given, much is expected.” This is a challenge, and a "push" to take a risk and do what I can. I always appreciate the challenges within your reflections. Thanks and God bless!

"...to distribute food ...." [Luke 12:42] These three 'simple words' are being said by JESUS. JESUS, the Visible Image of God, the Provider. JESUS fed people, especially when they were hungry.

I just read a reflection and summons from Rev. Margaret Ernst, pastor of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania on the starving children and families in Gaza. It is titled, "Loaves, Fishes, and Forced Starvation." Rev. Ernst's lifelong leadership in faith and justice is her prophetic gifts being given and shared at this most crucial time.

We need such prophetic voices all over in the Church today. We have long been asked to 'pray for vocations,' which have always meant vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Our Church needs to not only pray for PROPHETIC VOCATIONS, but encourage and empower us all to become prophets for equity, liberty, and true justice for all.
