Reflection for April 12, 2026

Believe

by Sister Lynne Marie Simonich

Next to Peter and John, Thomas is probably one of the most well know of the apostles.  He doubted, believed, and left room for our times of doubt.  Thomas represents just about everyone who asks “Do I really believe?”

We have a beautiful description of the early Christian community in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles:  they were devoted to the apostles’ teaching, the Eucharist and to prayer.  They deeply cared for each other.  “All who believed” gathered together.

Believe – how do we come to believe?  Is it from the strength of someone’s word or example?  A parent, friend, teacher – a book, movie or something that happens that is unexpected?  Believing calls for a leap – an act of trust.  “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed”. (John 20:29)

This Second Sunday of Easter is also known as Divine Mercy Sunday.  God’s mercy and love is unconditional…is that difficult to believe?

Who has inspired you to believe?  Maybe let that person know.  Blessed are they!

Belief if it means anything is grounded in experience so deep it cannot be ignored. Great suffering or great love are the experiences which, through grace, open us to God’s mercy and love.

Thank you for your thoughtful reflection. I join you in begging for God`s Mercy for our world. I also join you in your recall that we are invited to be a Community following "the apostles’ teaching, the Eucharist and the prayer".

I strongly believe but I cannot explain why. This is what Faith in God is. That is why God is God and I am not. Happy Easter.

She taught me to believe when she believed in me. Thank you, Cousin!

I thank my deceased parents for the gift of faith they instilled in me. I truly believe and know I'm loved by

God. Thank you Sister, for the great reflection.
