Reflection for Feb. 2, 2025

A quiet visit

Recognizing Christ in the Temple and in our Churches today

by Sister Agnes Fischer

On Sunday -- forty days after we contemplated the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem -- we celebrate that occasion when Mary and Joseph, in order to fulfill the law, presented their blessed son in the temple of Jerusalem. The Messiah awaited by the people of Israel enters the holy place, but is recognized by only two elderly people.

Simeon and Anna lived in a special friendship with God, and that is why the mystery of the Lord's presence in His Temple was revealed to them. They prophesied what would become of Jesus, and Simeon foretold what would happen to Mary.

Today we have the presence of the Lord in every church every day. He waits for us there with love and patience.

  • Is there a church nearby that is open during the day where I could stop in to “visit”?
  • Would I ever do that?
  • Why or why not?

Thanks Ag. Loved the idea of Simeon and Anna having a special relationship with our God. Great way to define a prophet.

What a wonderful connection between this feast and our opportunity to be in the presence of Jesus in our churches, at Mass, etc.

What a beautiful reflection. I think we all have to do a better job of putting our Lord Jesus Christ first in our lives!

Because I am older, I love to hear, reflect and identify with Simeon and Anna. I like to believe that I see the Savior in Creation, Humanity and Eucharist. Thank you, Agnes, for leading me to this meditation.

Thank you for the thought-provoking reflection! Jesus is waiting for us to have the same loving relationship as Simeon and Anna! May we open our hearts and minds!
