Reflection for Oct. 12, 2025

Among the nine or with the one?

Daily blessings are reasons to return to God and give thanks

by Sister Agnes Fischer

Of those ten lepers who were healed by Jesus, only one returned to thank Him for what He had done for him. Are we among the other nine?

Aren't there more than ten of us who have a job with which we can bring what we need to our homes, when there is so much unemployment?

And aren’t there more than ten of us who enjoy good, or relatively good, health when there are so many who are bedridden?

And are there not more than ten families who, thank God, are still together, in these times when there are so many homes split up, perhaps in our own city and even on our own street?

And are we not obviously more than ten who were able to wake up alive today, when so many can no longer see the light of this Sunday?

And aren't there many more than ten of us who have many more things to thank God for than things to ask for?

So why do we forget to thank God for all these benefits and gifts?

Today is a good day to do so.

I always try and start my morning prayer times with thanks...and for giving me another day on earth.

Thanks Aggie, it is so easy to say thanks to God for all we have.

Great questions! Don and I spend time morning, noon, and night expressing our gratitude to God for all the gifts we have been given and trying to discern how to use them all.

Thanks Sr. Aggie! I'm amazed at God's mercy when reminded how slow we are to say thanks for those things with us every day.

Very nicely written. I think I might be one of the ten who thank God every morning and night for

the day and all his blessings he has bestowed on me.

Your questions are inspiration for serious thought. They take us to the door of gratitude. We are a gifted people who need to be so thankful.

Never thought about the 10 lepers in this way, how I put off thanking God. But did give lepers credit for following Jesus orders to show themselves to the priests and then hopefully they too thanked God.
