Reflection for May 4, 2025

A dawn of second chances

By the water’s edge, forgiveness flows and love is rekindled

by Sister Mary Kabat

“It is the Lord!”

I can picture the scene ... the lake is calm, sound travels a great distance over the water, there is a person on the shore unrecognizable due to the distance and muted light of dawn. He calls out, “Have you caught anything?” “No,”  the apostles say. “Cast over the right side.” You know the rest of the story.

This is an encounter with Jesus that Peter badly needed. His denial of Jesus, not once but three times, must still weigh heavy on his heart. Jesus’ questions remind Peter what remains true – Peter loves Jesus and he is called again to follow Jesus; follow Jesus to his own death.

Jesus knows the words and actions we wish we could take back. He knows the good we wish we had done. He knows the heaviness, regret and guilt we carry, and he desires to hear that despite all our weaknesses, we love him and we set our feet again on the path to follow him.

Hear Jesus say to you, “Do you love me?”

Wow, so powerful! Deep in the silence of our hearts that question echoes. Thank you, Sr. Mary.

Your reflection today was a good reminder of God's forgiving nature for our human short comings. After reading it, I thought of these words from Paul's Letter to the Romans, "For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do - this I keep on doing." And yet, God can forgive me.

Thank you for this reflection. I like the way you re-created the scene at the lake. Thank you for reminding us that Jesus knows what we wish we had done. He knows our desire to move on, to do better. He loves us.

Mary, that is a favorite scene of mine in the Bible. I love your reflections and will be sharing them with our residents during our Communion prayer service on Monday at Angel's Touch. Thank you.

Your understanding of Peter's sadness and the relationship to our lives are so meaningful: "Jesus knows the words and actions we wish we could take back. He knows the good we wish we had done."

All those summers you lived on the Bay of Green Bay gives you a unique insight! Thanks for reminding us of the part of Peter which lives within each of us, and our need to reconcile past events when we were not at our best.

Take care!

Thank you for the reminder. Sometimes it's hard to hear Jesus but I know He loves me and I need to tell Him more often that I love Him.
