Persistence in faith shapes our hearts to mirror the steadfast love of God
by Sister Lynne Marie Simonich
Persistence is the word for our readings on this 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Exodus tells us that Aaron and Hur persisted in keeping Moses’ hands raised up in prayer to help Joshua and the Israelites win a battle.
St. Paul challenges us to “be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient." (2 Timothy 4:2)
Jesus tells his disciples about a widow who changes a corrupt judge through her persistence. Widows were considered the most powerless in society. This “powerless” widow wouldn’t go away. The judge acts justly to get rid of the annoyance she causes him. Jesus tells us, “Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night?” (Luke 18:7)
Jesus also asks if the Son of Man will find faith. If we persist in prayer, in reflection on the Word of God, and in living the Gospel, he will.
