Pope Francis' legacy reminds us that Jesus' command to love one another is important
by Sister Charlene Hockers
As I have loved you, so also should you love one another. (Jn. 13:34)
Less than a month ago, we were mourning the death and then celebrating the life of Pope Francis. As I reflected on this Sunday’s readings, I couldn’t help but also reflect on the life of this great church leader.
Pope Francis was known as the “People’s Pope.” And rightly so. His life was one of poverty, peace and love of creation. He was especially known as continually proclaiming love and mercy. His outreach to the historically marginalized by church and society was evident. Francis accepted everyone: women, immigrants, refugees, people of other faiths. He caressed children, he embraced the poor, the sick and disabled. He didn’t judge homosexuals, same-sex marriages, transgenders, those who had abortions, and the list goes on.
The legacy of Pope Francis can certainly relate back to our Risen Savior and His command to all to love one another. Love includes mercy, acceptance, reaching out to others, and loving creation.
The Holy Spirit is with us. Jesus is present to us, the Eucharist is always with us. God loves us; we need to love self and others in return. Praise God for what He can and does accomplish through us. Give praise and thanks, Alleluia!
Thanks, Charlie, for these beautiful reflections on our beloved Francis.
Alleluia!
