Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit works through our differences to build the Church
by Sister Laura Zelten
One of the most beautiful elements of Pentecost is unity in diversity. In the first reading, people from many nations hear the same message but in their own languages. The Holy Spirit doesn’t erase differences but works through them to create unity. This is the transformative power of the Holy Spirit – in our lives and the life of the Church.
The dramatic coming of the Holy Spirit, as tongues of fire resting on the apostles, marks not just a historical moment in the Church but the beginning of a new era. This moment empowers the apostles to boldly proclaim the Gospel, reminding them and us that the Spirit equips each of us for mission. We collaborate in the mission by living according to the Spirit rather than the flesh, as taught by St. Paul in the second reading.
Finally, the Gospel, we are reminded that we are God’s beloved children, able to call Him “Abba, Father,” through the Spirit. And as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit is our Advocate, guiding us and reminding us of His teachings.
Questions for reflection:
- In what ways have I experienced the guidance of the Holy Spirit in my life?
- How can I help build unity among people who are different from me?
- Am I living as a true child of God, led by the Spirit?
Thanks, Laur, and may the Spirit be with you as you continue to inspire the young students.
