Reflection for Dec. 28, 2025

Held together by love

Holy Scripture and the Holy Family lend insights into what truly makes a family

by Sister Lynne Marie Simonich

What is a family?

From the Book of Sirach we hear about family living and honoring parents even if their minds fail, revering them, obeying, taking care of them, being considerate of them.

From Paul’s letter to the Colossians we are challenged to: “put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness”…and over all these “put on love”.

Matthew tells us that Joseph risked his life to protect his family – Mary and Jesus.  He  took them away from danger to keep them safe.  They became homeless and isolated from all that was familiar but they had each other.

What is a family?  What holds a family together?  What holds your family together?
