Sister Mary Berg was born 22 years after her brother, Robert, to Joseph and Ruth (Casson) Berg in Marinette. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes School and transferred in eighth grade to St. Joseph School in Marinette. One year at St. Joseph convinced her to enter the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross. After her freshman year at Marinette Catholic High School, she entered the pre-novitiate.
Upon first profession of vows, Sister Mary continued her education at Marquette University in Milwaukee. She holds a bachelor's degree in sociology/education from Marquette and a master's degree in administration from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
She taught in the Green Bay Diocese at St. Boniface, De Pere; St. John the Baptist, Howard; St. Mary, Peshtigo; Holy Angels, Darboy; St. Charles, Lena (including serving as principal); Holy Cross, Bay Settlement; Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pulaski; Holy Name, Kimberly; and Trinity, Trinity-St. Joseph, Holy Apostles, and St. Bernard, Green Bay.
Sister Mary currently volunteers one afternoon as receptionist at St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter; one afternoon at Wellspring, a day drop-in center for women; teaches English as a second language; and drives for some of the retired Sisters at the Motherhouse.
Along with her volunteer work, Sister enjoys reading, listening to classical music, cooking, and cheering for the Green Bay Packers.
