Sister Gerald (Angela) Lu Maye was born in Brussels, Wis., to August and Adeline Lu Maye. On the family farm, she helped care for younger siblings and washed dishes. The Lu Maye family belonged to St. Hubert Parish in Rosiere, and the children attended Roosevelt School in Misere.
Sister attended Brussels High School for one year before entering St. Francis Convent in 1953. After her novitiate, she ministered for three years at the McCormick Home in Allouez and learned how to care for the elderly. Sister Gerald was also a homemaker for Sisters teaching in parish schools, and she worked at Holy Name Retreat House in Door County for seven summers.
Starting in the mid-1980s, Sister Gerald worked for 20 years in area nursing homes, first as a nursing assistant, then as a cook. Residents and staff had a special place in her heart. She tried to treat each person with kindness.
Upon returning to the Motherhouse in 2006, she enjoyed baking bread and cookies and working in the flower gardens and lawn. Now fully retired, Sister Gerald shares her green thumb by caring for plants. She also enjoys listening to music and cherishes her time for prayer.
