Reflection for Sept. 18, 2016

Helping those who suffer is a way to serve God

by Sister Charlene Hockers

What is your attitude toward money? What is your attitude toward the poor? These questions are worth asking when reflecting on our Sunday readings.

The first reading, from the Book of Amos, addresses the exploitation of the poor and the weak. It is evident today as well that there are many exploited workers. We might say, “Isn’t it terrible?” and not do anything about it. Instead, what action can we take to help someone who is suffering because of economic injustice?

Our Gospel reading could throw some light on it. What is our virtue of stewardship like? Our money is not our own. We need to be honest and responsible in its use. We need to use wisely and share generously what God has given us.

Stewardship means assessing our resources and then sharing with those who are poor and exploited. We need to share our time, talent, and treasure. What are we doing to help our family, friends, the Church and especially the poor? Think about it, pray about it and then act on it!

Jesus, teach me to be a good steward.

Sr. Charlene poses soul-searching questions. Thank you, Sr. Charlene. I also checked out the "Reduce Poverty" page, as suggested. Thank you. Matt. 25: 21-45, is commonly known as "The Last Judgment." It is from this source that the song, "Whatsoever You Do" is taken. And while I have long appreciated its message, especially as handed down to us in the song, as I grew older, I came to realize something 'more ...' 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, ........." I saw the word, NATIONS, and realized there is more to JESUS' vision and message than I had yet understood. I started to see how JESUS is calling People, not only as individuals, but as [a] Nation/s. That we are meant to be a PEOPLE who care for the least; we are meant to be a PEOPLE who serve and attend to the needs of those who go hungry or homeless or are violated, especially because of oppression, exploitation, excessive greed, etc. I began to see how every Nation will be held accountable for how we / they live out this mandate. And I began to see how much we need JESUS' Vision and Values to be realized in our economic systems, within our government systems, within our social systems, educational and health systems, and yes, even in our religious systems.

Very important message, Sister. Thank you!
