Reflection for Dec. 4, 2016

How is the fruit from your 'tree of faith'?

by Sister Madonna Swintkoske

John the Baptizer does not mince words when he proclaims, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” and “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” He challenges the Pharisees and Sadducees to “give evidence” they had a change of heart.

God had promised to send the one who would be our hope, consolation, and redeemer. God has kept this promise. The Kingdom of God is here and the challenge of John the Baptizer remains the same. We are asked to give evidence that we have had a change of heart. During this Advent season we renew our commitment to Jesus.  Let us keep our promises of:

What evidence can we give that we are serious about reforming our hearts and lives?

Thank you Sister - "presenting the evidence" - a very serious and thoughtful reminder of the challenge presented by John the Baptizer. It's encouraging me to dig deep!

Excellent reflection, Madonna, and very clearly presented.

"Blessed is the fruit of your [contemplative] womb, JESUS."
I am reminded by Sr. Madonna how deep must be our prayer-life for the CHRIST to be born in and through us these days, as her reflection evokes. And how both John the Baptist (pre-Christianity) and Paul the Evangelist (post Resurrection), each expressed this 'Sacred Mystery' in their own way, in their own time. John with, "[Christ] must increase; I must decrease." Jn.3:30; and Paul with, "...it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me." Gal.2:20.
Here and now, Advent-Christmas 2016, we pray to make it so: "Blessed is the fruit of your [contemplative] womb, JESUS." Lk.1:42

Nor does John mince words when he refers to us as a "brood of vipers" until we repent our sins and accept God's mercy. Excellent reflection Sister, thank you!
